HOW DO I START LEARNING ABOUT ASTROLOGY?

Astrology is everywhere on social media right now! It’s wonderful that so many people are more interested in Astrology and that it’s having a huge resurgence. But what should you do if you want to take things a step further and start learning astrology in a more grounded and meaningful way?

It can be tempting to learn bits here and there from books or TikTok, and there are so many astrology courses out there too. But before diving in, I really recommend taking a moment to reflect and research what you actually want to learn, what the gaps in your knowledge are, the styles of astrology you’re drawn to, and how you like to learn.

CHOOSING HOW YOU WANT TO LEARN ASTROLOGY

There are so many different branches and approaches to astrology, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed at first. I always recommend starting with the basics, and learning them really well.

Many people think of astrology as being all about the Zodiac, and yes, that’s a wonderful place to start. But don’t overlook the importance of the planets. The planets are the main players; the zodiac signs and houses are the setting.

If you only learn about the zodiac, it can feel like you “know” a lot, but when you go to apply it to a chart, it doesn’t always click. Learning about the planets gives you the foundation to truly understand how astrology works.

And when you study the planets, go deeper than just a few keywords. Mars isn’t just anger, and Saturn isn’t only limitation. Each planet has a huge range of expression that connects to an archetypal theme. Once you understand these archetypes, you’re starting to speak the language of astrology.

LEARNING THE PLANETS AND THEIR RELATIONSHIPS

The next step once you know the planets is learning how they relate to each other. What happens when Mars is square Saturn, or Venus is opposite the Moon? This is the crux of astrology.

It’s nuanced and layered, but understanding the aspects between planets is what makes astrology come alive. The more you explore how the planets interact, the more fluent you become.

Honestly, if you know the planets and how they speak to each other, you can already begin to understand a lot about your chart. This is why I prefer to teach astrology this way: master the planets and their aspects first, then layer in the zodiac and houses later.

Why? Because you can start working with astrology straight away. When you focus only on the zodiac and houses, you might feel like you’ve memorised a lot, but you’re still missing the depth. Learning astrology in this way gives you the most insight and progress for your effort.

WHAT ABOUT THE HOUSES?

The houses are often taught as a “quick win” in astrology. For example, if you know your birth time, you can see which house the next New Moon falls into, which is fun and can be insightful. But did you know that even now, astrologers still don’t all agree on which house system is the “right” one?

So where do you start? Personally, I take houses with a grain of salt, especially when you’re first learning. For me, I’d rather begin with the things that are universally agreed upon and that give you the deepest understanding — the planets and their aspects.

MY RECOMMENDED WAY TO START LEARNING ASTROLOGY

You might not be surprised to know that I created my own astrology course in 2025, Spiritual Nutrition Astrology Fundamentals.

We start with Inner Astrology, developing your self-awareness, intuition and inner senses as your foundation. You’ll learn about the Luminaries (Sun and Moon), Personal Planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars) and the Angles in the chart, before diving into Aspects Part 1. There’s lots of practice and examples using the Luminaries and Personal Planets, so it really starts to click.
